Training

Black Dog Analytical is a full-service grit analysis company.  We provide on-site evaluation, set-up and grit characterization.  When completed, samples are sent to our lab in Illinois for analytical analysis.  However; we realize that some services are time-dependent and it is not always convenient for Black Dog to get on-site for proper testing.  Because of the dynamic environment associated with the testing of facilities, Black Dog Analytical offers training to employees on-site so that they may evaluate the grit systems during peak operation or during storm events.

We will come to your facility and train employees on the following:

  • Building and setting up samplers
  • Building and setting up settling containers (samplers and settlers will remain on-site for any additional testing in the future)
  • Proper operation and adjustment of all equipment to ensure appropriate grit collection.
  • Collected samples will be sent to Black Dog Analytical for analysis and a report will be generated.
Advantages:
  • Reduce yearly costs by having an in-house sampling SOP
  • Reduce costs associated with excessive maintenance due to lack of routine testing.
  • Operators can identify problems via grit chamber evaluations and reduce downtime associated with equipment maintenance.
  • Save on equipment costs (once built, the equipment stays on-site for future testing and is owned by the facility)
  • Ideal for facilities with lots of grit or specialty grit (northern climates where snowmelt carries soot and debris into the facility)

Services

Black Dog Analytical provides on-site grit evaluations of facility waste streams and equipment including:

  • Influent Grit Characterizations
  • Grit Chamber Performance evaluations
  • Washer/Classifier Performance Evaluations
  • Single sample analysis
  • Simultaneous multi-point evaluations

Once a visit is scheduled, Black Dog staff arrive one day early to assess the facility's sampling sites and place sampling equipment.  Sampling occurs the following day and begins prior to the facility's peak flow. The duration of sampling varies but generally lasts for six to eight hours continuously.  After sampling, the collected grit is sent to the lab in Illinois and is sieved and analyzed for settling velocity.  The fractioned samples are then analyzed for drying and ashing.  Usually within two weeks a report is generated that includes:

  • Physical Size distributions
  • Sand Equivalent Size (SES)
  • Grit concentrations
  • Performance, in percent removed
  • All raw data collected
  • Site pictures
